In America, we find ourselves within a set of systems that were built on intrinsic racist ideology that perpetuates the oppression of Black, indigenous, and people of color. We also find that the church in America is not immune to the complicity of furthering those systems, and more specifically, Bloom is not immune. We recognize and repent of the fact that we are only a narrow representation of what the Church was meant to be. We recognize that we have work to do as a church and as a community to be the brilliant, beautiful, multiethnic expression that it was meant to be.

Over the past few months, we’ve seen so many resources come across our social media feeds, inboxes, and in conversation with friends that are meant to help us in the work to not just denounce racism, but to be anti-racistWe know there is so much learning and unlearning to do, so many ways to take action, and so many opportunities for introspection and repentance. This page is meant to a be a resource that compiles certain materials that will help us live into the original design for the church as seen in the book of Acts. As we look at our church, we believe there are 3 ways that we can live within our values and become what the church is meant to be: multi-ethnic, inviting, and accepting of people of every race.

OUR VALUE

Beauty

God, the source and ground of all goodness, is beautiful. We believe that our desire for and orientation towards beauty is in fact a desire for and orientation towards God and the world He is bringing about.

OUR VALUE

Learning & Unlearning

If we truly believe that every person is made in the image of God, then it is our work to educate ourselves on the ways in which we as the American church have failed to see that beauty in every person, and also recognize the biases and prejudices that can live within us. These resources span from historical and academic to practical and introspective, and we hope they could be a starting point us to see the biases and prejudice, and hopefully begin to manifest in your life ways in which will lead us towards breaking habits and wrong-thinking as the Spirit convicts and guides us.

OUR VALUE

Sacrament

Rooted in the historic Christian Church, we believe that partaking in the life of the sacraments draws us ever into Christ-likeness and are signs of receiving God’s sure and certain grace. The lives we live, with the sacraments as anchors to our story, are then a window into all beauty of the Triune God and a shoot unto the world that all are beckoned to come and partake as well.

OUR VALUE

Repentance & Renewal

Sacraments are visible signs of an inward grace. As we adopt a pattern of bringing the whole of who we are to Christ in order to receive the fullness of Christ in our lives, we experience that inward grace. We begin to take on a renewed nature as we live deeper into the reality that we have been made one with Christ. This renewed nature draws us to repentance, to a posture of humility and openness as we adopt a rhythm of offering ourselves to Christ in sacrament and to receiving Christ in our lives.

In the sacrament of the Eucharist, we are reminded that the table has been set for ALL people to come and partake in the mystery of Christ. We repent of the ways in which we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves, of the things which we have done and left undone. It also means we have put ourselves in a posture to humbly change the things in our lives that don’t line up with God’s design for his people and his church, that leads to a renewal of our covenantal responsibility as people who follow Christ. These resources are meant to help us do just that: to help us renew our minds and attitudes to reflect the mind and attitude of Christ.

OUR VALUE

Restoration

The arc of Scripture bends toward a vision of comprehensive, cosmic renewal of all creation, made manifest in all of life— our persons, communities, work, and resources. And thus we stand with the prophets of ancient Israel in believing that God’s dream is a world in which each human being is treated with proper dignity, being made in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, our desire is to seek creative ways to partner with God in seeing that dream come to fruition, that God’s beautiful vision for a new heavens and a new earth would be made manifest in the here and now.

OUR VALUE

Action & Service

Christ says, “Behold, I am making all things new”. As we seek to be changed more into the likeness of Christ, we join in with God’s work of renewal in our world. If we commit to learning and unlearning, repentance and renewal, then we must also commit to action and service. Action and service are the only responses we can have to institutional and systemic injustice and oppression of human beings. In this section, you’ll find ways in which you can act and apply the education and change that is happening within your heart, and journey towards becoming an ally to our brothers and sisters who are Black, indigenous, and all people of color.
