To follow Christ is to place all of our life, including our possessions, at his disposal. Together with him, we seek to use our resources joyfully and generously for the good of others. We are committed to a life of generosity, contributing each as we are able both to the ministry of the local church and to those people and causes to which God may lead us.
Generosity is an assumed part of the life of the believer. Because God gave all for us, we are called to place all of our possessions at Godís disposal, for the good of others.
Generosity is how the character of the self-giving and utterly generous God is made manifest in us. It is a concrete and tangible way that his life comes into the world. Thus the words of Jesus: "It is more blessed to give than to receive". Generosity is also a core way that justice, peace, and love are built up in the world.
We see the commitment to generosity working itself out on two fronts:
1. We give to our local church, Bloom. The regular practice of tithing a percentage of our income helps support the work that God is doing among us.
2. We give to those people and causes that the Spirit may lead us to give to.
December is a time when many people consider above-and-beyond giving to causes they care about. For some, it's because the holidays are a time of gratitude for provision that spurs a desire to give back. For others, it's to capture tax benefits of giving before the end of the year. For the lucky few, it's the bit of breathing room that end-of-year bonuses provide.
As you each individually set your own giving priorities for December, we would ask you to consider allocating some of your above-and-beyond giving to Bloom.
As part of this effort to make our finances more sustainable, you will likely hear from us in the coming months about ways that you can help offset our costs through commitments of your time and your talent.
For now, however, above-and-beyond December giving will give us critical financial breathing room in the coming months. To help with this, one of the members of our community has offered to make a matching donation up to $10K for every dollar donated in December above our "breakeven" rate of $21K. So if the community donates $25K in December ($4K above our breakeven amount), this member will donate $4K to match. If the community donates $31K--$10K above our breakeven amount—this member will donate $10K. In this latter scenario, the combined giving of the congregation and the matching donation would more than double our current cash balances.
So please do consider Bloom in your end of year giving. If ever you have considered making an extra gift to the community, now would be a great time.
